About the Program
Children growing up in disenfranchised communities lack access to resources and opportunities and attend schools that are not equipped to meet all their needs. This is known as educational inequity. Teach For America is a diverse network of leaders who confront educational inequity by teaching for at least two years and then working with unwavering commitment from every sector of society to create a nation free from this injustice. As educators, advocates, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and community members, we fight for the aspirations of students and families.
In 1990, Teach For America entered South Louisiana as 1 of 5 founding regions nationwide. TFA continues to impact the education landscape of the Capital Area, serving Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, and Pointe Coupee parishes. TFA’s network of educators and advocates is a force of over 64,000 leaders working in over 9,000 schools nationwide in pursuit of profound systemic change. From classrooms to districts to state houses across America, they are reimagining education to realize the day when every child has an equal opportunity to learn, lead, thrive, and co-create a future filled with possibility.
The program begins with a two-year commitment to teach in a classroom. The majority of our teachers continue to teach after their commitment is completed, while others go on to serve children and our education system in other capacities. Teach For America is a proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network. The program is free to join and each corps member receives financial support as they train and transition to their corps region.
